thanks for tuning in jin and tantra uh for those of us who like our spirituality with the twist uh today we have uh myself daniel uh driving the spaceship if you will uh and eric is off this week but we are happy to have with uh a friend of the show priscilla peach lang priscilla say hello for our audio and visual uh audience today hello hello so uh as i mentioned in the introduction we're gonna be um getting into a small i guess piece of a book uh known as the prophet by khalil gibran i'll leave the text in the description of the podcast or the video so that you can peruse it for yourself but you know i sometimes read books again and and this particular passage stood out so i wanted to have a conversation about it because i think it's worth i think it's worth discussing uh so yeah so the book was written in like 1926 or 23 or something like that so it's almost 100 years old but it's still you know it's still relevant i feel like it's so good yeah so good yeah so i'm gonna go ahead and read the passage that this way people have it um and if you're listening to it or watching us and you want to pull it up to have some reference that's totally cool uh but uh get out your little juice boxes and some uh pretzels and take a seat uh it's not very long but i'll read it right now and then we can we can discuss and for those you know listening or watching you can certainly uh play along with our game and it reads then a mason came forth and said speak to us of houses and he the prophet in this case answered and said build of your imaginings a sanctuary in the wilderness before you build a house within the city of walls for even as you have homecomings in your twilight so has the wanderer in you the ever distant and alone your house is your larger body it grows in the sun and sleeps in the stillness of the night and it is not dreamless does your house not dream and dreaming leave the city for a grove or hilltop would that i could gather your houses into my hand and like a farmer scatter them into the forest and meadow would the valleys were your streets and the green paths your alleys and you might seek one another through vineyards and come with the fragrance of the earth in your garments but these things are not yet to be in their fear your forefathers gathered you too near together and that fear shall endure a little longer a little longer shall your city walls separate your hearts from your fields and tell me o people of this town called or feliz what have you in these houses and what is it that you guard with fastened doors have you peace the quiet urge that reveals your power have you remembrances the glimmering arches that span the summits of the mind have you beauty that leads the heart from things fashioned of wood and stone to the holy mountain tell me have you these in your houses or have you only comfort and the lust for comfort and the stealthy thing that enters a house as a guest and then becomes a host and then the master i it becomes a tamer and with a hook and scourge makes puppets of your larger desires though its hands are silken its heart is of iron it lulls you to sleep only to stand by your bed and jeer at the dignity of your flesh it makes mock of your sound senses and lays them and thistle down like fragile vessels verily the lust for comfort murders the passion of the soul and then walks grinning in the funeral but you children of space you restless and rest you shall not be trapped nor tamed your house shall not be an anchor but a mast it shall not be a glistening film that covers a wound but an eyelid that guards the eye you shall not fold your wings that you may pass through doors nor bend your heads that they strike not against the ceiling nor fear to breathe lest walls should crack and fall down you shall not dwell in tombs made by the dead for the living although the magnificence and splendor of your house shall not hold your secrets nor shelter your longing for that which is boundless in you abides in the mansion of the sky whose door is morning mist and whose windows are the songs and silences of the night so that is the uh that is the passage and that is what we are going to be uh talking about so uh let me let me priscilla let me begin with you if you don't mind give me your you know you know we kind of talked about this uh maybe a couple weeks ago about doing it and so today this sort of opportunity opened up and and i you know you had read this book previously uh again this book is uh called the prophet the author is khalil gibran he's written a number of books you know but this probably is his most famous so when i asked you to do this with me and you read it what were your what was your initial kind of take away from it i think um i mean i've always loved this book because the poetic-ness the excerpts and the chapters are very short but like this is the one of the chapters that i feel like whenever you read the book certain chapters will settle with you you know so there's one on children and i reread this book again whenever i had my first child and so like i feel like you're always reading it and relating to the chapters and so whenever you send it to me this is a chapter that i have um you know i've read but i've never like really sat and thought about you know and so um i think it's just really beautiful because the people that are asking the questions in the beginning they it's a mason that's asking basically and i think one of the most powerful learning and transformative things that we can do is our is our power of storytelling which is why the poetry is so beautiful and so immediately he's connecting to the mason he's talking about the it seems like he's talking about the brick and the mortar like the building it and and as it moves you can see him slowly transitioning to like alluding to something else so it's so relatable in the beginning and that's what i really love about these chapters is that they're relatable to the person asking the question and it starts out as a concept like a real tangible concept and then it moves so slowly to like this eluding of a more maybe esoteric or ethereal kind of idea or concept and um so i feel like you know you and i talked about what is the what does the house represent you know it's like it was thrown out there to the mason for relatability i feel like but it does have this kind of you know i've just been thinking about like what i have settled on meaning and we said maybe imagination maybe this like childlike spirit maybe a larger awareness of our consciousness and so those are kind of my ideas from the beginning okay well if you don't mind you know because i don't know if people are going to have this where they can see it but i kind of wanted to go through piece by piece and then we'll sort of break it down right um and see you know kind of what comes up as we do it and then we can maybe at the end do some kind of like larger picture takeaways this way people can have you know some for those who are just listening uh or just watching uh you'll get to see you know my beautiful face hello um all right so it says build of your imaginings a sanctuary in the wilderness before you heal build a house within the city walls for even as you have homecomings in your twilight so has the wanderer in you ever distant and alone so when i kind of you know when i took this i think it it said at least to me that people don't prioritize the the same like that like their natural state their natural sanctuary right they'd rather have a a house or a place to reside within the city that's too too too overcrowded or to you know too busy to you know fill in your societal word here you know and they'll prioritize that before they even imagine building something somewhere else or residing somewhere somewhere else that is a kind of like a more restorative natural place because the actual word in the text is is boer build it building a bower and a boar can mean a sanctuary it could mean a pergola it could mean uh a place of refuge but i just chose the word sanctuary because to me it feels this feels right when i when i read it this way you know yeah i agree yeah i think you've even like um you know when it's talking about building constructs i even think about like laws or principles or personal truths you know so building your laws or principles along the the laws of nature or um you know and later we can kind of talk later as the thing goes on but like just this idea of the construct made by man like you know like sometimes as we get older you know we grew up in a society with all of these with these limitations basically and they're very different from natural law and we get disconnected from that and so like if you don't have your foundation built on these like natural principles and truths you can waver it can be very easy for you to you know um fall into a path that may not be your own you know your own personal path from your inside or something so i'm reminded of that statement um there are no straight lines in nature yeah you know so we have so we're kind of juxtaposed with like man-made city what like specifically walls right because walls are straight yeah totally and they have boundaries yeah they're boundaries they contain things like containing is always so comfortable for humans because we don't like the unknown or like you know we like to know where our boundaries are we like to have answers or labels so totally yeah this is cool because you know we talked about doing you know just kind of for our listeners like so we're doing this now we haven't done this before we just kind of talked about doing this so we're going to unpack this as it goes and as it goes it's going to flower and continue so whoever's listening like we're doing this as an active kind of book club but like far more um microscopic you know but i think it's cool so i'm excited to see kind of where it goes so i'll just read a little bit further right it says your house is your larger body period it grows in the sun and sleeps in the stillness of the night and it is not dreamless does your house not dream and dreaming leave the city for a grove or hilltop i'll let you start oh man for me when i read this um i i feel like this is where i was really relating to this idea of like our consciousness and awareness so like we you know when we think of dreaming or imagining things like i think that like everybody has dreams of grandeur you know we we fantasize and we dream about things better and bigger and um that like as we live in the day and as we experience the day and we experience what other people have and what you know advertisements and marketing in this world that we have to walk in um you know uh it is it is a living growing thing of input and how it can like shape and change our perception and how we see the world and it can affect our desires and so that's kind of like what i was like feeling from it so you know what's interesting is that like i can i'm observing my own mind operate right right now so i'm wanting to to look at this entire passage the whole thing from not not just these two paragraphs but the whole thing and try and find a theme try and find the one thing that he's talking about to tie it up you know yeah yeah but doing this with that mindset actually is making it more difficult for me because i actually don't think that now that i'm thinking lie i'm thinking and talking out loud live well wonderful it's fine everyone's always doing it by the way so i'm not special but i will say but not everybody records it and shares it with other people so that's a little unique there's only like priscilla there's only like three million podcasts i'm so unique give me a break you know anyway okay okay uh of the worldwide three million mm-hmm anyways but i actually i i so it says the house is your larger body which to me is like such an interesting statement right so i i thought of this a little bit more physically like in like an actual home you know and like i'm thinking like well you know if everything is alive right or has some amount of like connectivity to other things i guess that when i that's what i mean when i say everything is alive not necessarily like this walk is going to talk to me but that like everything is connected in terms of where it came from where it's going what it's going to be a part of you know the sort of not anthropomorphization that i would give to a wall that would talk but the fact that like it helps to contain my awareness and and separate you know whatever so that it's part of a consciousness itself right somebody created a course that like this thing has its own kind of desires it has its own so dreaming is sort of like a kind of aspect of visualization you know that like does does the whole does do things that we would consider inanimate right do they not dream as well are they not a larger extension of us so that if we're alive and we mark our aliveness or part of which we mark our aliveness aliveness is through dreaming is through the ability to kind of come and go come and return you know or go and return i guess i could say that wouldn't the things that we share sort of space with do the same thing or have the same ability that's kind of how i sort of read this part yeah i mean and it's like i said it's still at the very beginning of the passage of the chapter so like i do think that it's like you know still very much leaning towards the more physical like this physical non like yeah like non-living like structural thing totally and so yeah and i think like as you if you get to the end of the passage and you go back you can you can interpret it differently but for sure i think that the relatability is still being nailed home of like these things of like you know totally yeah uh so the next part here i'll say um would i or would that i could gather your houses into my hand and like a farmer scatter them into the forest and metal would the valleys were your streets or would the valleys be your streets and the green paths be your alleys that you might seek one another through vineyards and come with the fragrance of the earth in your garments um so i'll start and then you know you can go so um would i gather your houses into my hand and and you know like a farmer scattered them into the forest and meadow to me i i took this not this is kind of where it started to change for me right because he's using a metaphorical like if i could take your homes into my hand i guess i could maybe say these are more like for me anyways these felt like the beginnings of like one's intention or desires or hopes or dreams or things that we would say you know like we we could plant the seed and it would grow yeah that's how to say for sure like he's collecting the houses in his hand so for sure like this idea of like an imagination or like these these deep deep levels of subconsciousness that like that's where the houses are like these deeper layers and gathering them to yeah throw them and plant something to to grow something new you know for sure and he's yeah it's like go ahead no please go but it also builds on what he just said previously do your houses not dream as you do you know i'm saying so he's kind of collecting this kind of thing and moving it forward to the next yeah you know it's like the first part of that tying into like the second half like we're starting to slowly move there's like little ties starting to happen yeah yeah yeah and then i said you know would the valleys be your streets the green paths be your alleys that you might see one another through vineyards and come with the fragrance of the earth and your garments to it's just like saying instead of moving through cityscapes you know that you would be you know living in in a more natural accordance not accordance but you'd be living in a more natural kind of place and that when you would go to one place or another you would smell like the outside not necessarily smell like a you know a piss-filled alley and i think it also alludes to the fact that like these he's it's the same place he's talking about the same place but seeing it differently yeah he's you know i'm saying and so this idea that like i think we've talked in the past a lot of times about like our own value systems of like sometimes you don't have to change your job or like your partner or like your way that you're doing anything you just have to change the way you see it you know like your perception of it you know you can keep everything exactly the same you don't have to like sell your house and make this huge transformation it just can happen in the mind it's your relationship how you're interacting with it and your true um you know your true effort and emotion and participation in it you know so but sometimes you do have to change absolutely no absolutely i agree i'm not disagreeing with you there but um yeah cause like something you know like some things are unhealthy and you have to just yeah like kind of give that up no for sure i'm not saying you can it's all in the head but like yeah i'm just saying it's also like this passage i think is really saying that like you know if i challenged you could you change your ideas about this and make it this and would it bring you more peace there might be some like if you overcome the fear of seeing it one way would there be some would you there'd be some reward or gain you know so anyway the next the next part uh it says in their fear your forefathers gathered you too near and that fear shall endure a little longer a little longer shall your city walls separate your hearts from your fields i quite this to me this is kind of like the the movement from like i don't know there's this passage and one later on i i quite like it because it speaks a little bit to like ancestry first you know but then second it says that like we're fear driven creatures actually we're survival based creatures you know and that like you the it's the the city walls separate your hearts from the fields meaning like the openness and the expansiveness of nature who are separated from that by the walls that were built from the people who were scared of being engaged previously totally and yeah like that's like those laws are those things are created by a man like like i said we were talking before about like nature law versus like man-made law and um i think as humans like we do you know fear is like a driving force in a lot of things you know so totally it's a survival mechanism you know i'm not going to no totally oh god you know whatever don't have fear but it's like it's it's one emotion and and it and like in older days i think in more primal days it was a necessity to like basically like throw the body into a into a response situation you know and so i mean it's yeah it's a sort of it is a survival mechanism like biologically too you know so yeah he's i i feel like here he's talking like really trying to get at separation you know yeah yeah separate from the whole i mean even chinese medicine like the hole is better that's why we diagnose the body as a whole you know because the whole is that like once you start separating things it's no bueno uh then he said then he asked the people of the town what have you in these houses what is it that you guard with fastened doors um have you piece the quiet urge that reveals your power have you remembrances the grimmer the glimmering arches that span the summits of the mind have you beauty that leads the heart from things fashioned of wood and stone to the holy mountain so we'll go through this in the next part because an export has its own kind of piece to it right so um have you peace have your remembrances have you beauty uh i i i think this to me this the the most interesting of of these was the one that says have you peace the quiet urge that reveals your power right so like that what they're saying is that like a powerful mind you know or a powerful being is one that has peace one that knows peace right not necessarily meaning that one who has been pacified but one who is peaceful you know and i i feel like especially you know as people see more people on we'll call it i'm gonna call it television but i'm just gonna say on a screen you know meaning the 2d version of an actual being without ever getting the sense the the true essence of a person because they can only be sensed by being around them you know you need to feel their energy you know yeah that we get these kind of false ideas of bravado yeah you know whether it be from you know politicians or people selling something or fake gurus or you know whatever instagram posts you know with filters and built-in situations and of course some situations need leaders that's fine um but not everybody's good at everything and not everybody's super tough and not everybody has all the answers it's not clean it is not clean there are not the city walls don't exist in the forest for a reason you know and so i just thought that was such a and just an interesting um statement on like because it's rare that people talk about power because normally we're talking about power in a negative fashion oh the power dynamic is off this person has more inherent power than that one the system is is you know exerting its power on the on more unfortunate and most of those things i totally agree with but i'm not talking about systemic farm we're talking about individual you know since sensation of being empowered you know comes from at least according to to khalil gibran and this passage here comes from a sense of peace which i just find to be like quite a profound statement actually oh yeah no absolutely i mean i took the i took this statement as like also just the material things like an actual house like locking doors to protect actual things material things and i think what i have to say actually we'll wait for a couple passages but you know i think the um there is something to say about like peace and like a deep sort of contentment so like whenever you have a deep source of contentment your whole or your cup is filled and um you know only then can you give to other people you can only show up for other people when you are full yourself i feel like and so there's um you know there's something like that that piece is like there's something that whenever you feel it you all of a sudden your value system changes i think you know i had a personal experience in my life where you know it was dealing with money and there was like a lot of bitterness and i felt like so scattered and energetic and the minute i like changed my mind about it and like and then had forgiveness there was like this overwhelming like lesson that i feel like i learned i still carry it with me today you know um and so those those types of things i think like that piece that i felt after it was so profound like i could never forget it you know it is um it's it's affected me since it happened and that was like oh my god like 15 so i like almost probably too high as a long time ago not going to age myself when i focus i'm not that old but still and next moving on um and so it says oh tell me what do you have in these houses or have you only comfort and the lust for comfort that stealthy thing that enters a house as a guest then becomes a host and then a master and then it becomes a tamer with a hook and scourge and makes puppets of your larger desires though its hands are silken its heart is of iron it lulls you to sleep only to stand by your bed and jeer at the dignity of your flesh it makes mock or makes fun of your sound senses and lays them in the thistle down like fragile vessels and thistle down as like small flower particles that float in the in the wind yeah only the lust for comfort or action so it says it murders the lust for uh murders the lust for comfort and the passion of the murders of lust for comfort and the passion of the soul and then walks grinning in the in the funeral at the funeral yeah so this this part is probably my i'm not i'm about to go off off the rails so let me start so this part is is such a i think it's so fitting for right now you know so fitting for right now especially you know after everybody has you know who's listening this you know survive the the pandemic and not just the you know covet and whatever but all of the sort of mental strains that were put on everybody and that like even though we were home people were buying who could afford to were buying so much more you know like the the focus on the home grew exponentially which then had ripple effects in the housing market and everything else right but that like it increased the level of like home focused comfort focused right like creating a sort of sanctuary which yes people who are listening they say but daniel didn't you say to create a sanctuary and i would say yes but not not separate from others you know not separate from this from the the city not separate from other people but that like actually discomfort that comes in is a stealthy thing that enters as a guest and becomes a host and then a master and i love this it says its hands are silken but its heart is of iron you know the lust for comfort murders the passion of the soul then walks grinning into the funeral because really and truly for me you know like there is appropriate time like in chinese medicine there's there's activity and then there's rest and you and you need a balance of both everything is always about striking the balance but this desire for comfort the desire for ease a desire for convenience we sell our souls for this you know in terms of giving up our information to companies having amazon one click purchasing things that need to be delivered like two minutes right now instacart grubhub ubereats like everything and it's just disempo for me anyways is disempowering us consistently and when people get consistently more disempowered they end up staying in they end up staying secluded and probably more to the point of this thing they stay more isolated actually you know and so even though it's certainly nice to be comfortable who doesn't like that i like that i'm sitting in a comfortable chair right now my clothes are comfortable you know like we don't want to be suffering for sure right we want to avoid suffering i get it yeah i understand and i'm you know not pro-injury i'm not pro-suffering but there is a level to wish that you're we're trying to some i i just feel like society is really trying to cultivate this idea of like no suffering right no hardship no discomfort but this is a fallacy actually and the search for it and the acquisition of things to implement so so much comfort only does really only softens the the softens it slackens the soul in a sense you know and so i just love it since its hands are soaking but its heart is made of iron because comfort only knows one thing it's to sink really is to sink after you're free and easy without the you know the the i guess i could say the the doldrums of the day that when it's all finished you know and you're in your nice place like i don't know there's there's we could talk about this for like probably ten years but you know i want to hear what you say so that this is this is this is my part i just wanted to say again at the end uh the lust for comfort murders the passion of the soul and then walks grinning in at the funeral savage just savage you know i'm savage though like when you say you're like not pro-suffering i'm pro-suffering i don't think you'll i i don't think you could ever find someone that's had true transformation that will tell you like they did it walking in sunshine you know and i feel like that's unfortunately um i don't think i mean it doesn't necessarily have to happen but i think really that's i mean it's the what do they say it's the pressure that makes the diamond you know like you don't get a diamond by just throwing some carbon in like a cup and just let it i mean you could wait a million years you know it's the pressure and um and the beauty that comes from that is like for me that's um that's where it's always been and so like whenever it was talking about like the comfort and um how it sneaks into your home as a guest um i think that's so relevant today because when you say whenever this passage said comfort in my head it was like really referring to like instant gratification and the ease of things you know like getting things when you didn't work for them and whenever i say i'm going off the rails i just i don't mean off the rails but like i like it really brought to my mind some of the studies that i have read i think about the brain a lot like like chemically and neurologically um because my daughter had a stroke so i love reading about the i have like firm belief in the neuroplasticity of the brain and its ability but um i think when it says comfort sneaks in as a guest it's talking about like whenever i mean when we're instantly gratified there's papers and research papers talking about like the dopamine dump that happens you know and like the instability of it because dopamine works with um serotonin it works with oxytocin it works with endorphins and there has to be this like beautiful balance of it you know and there's something to say about working and going through things whether it's sometimes it's just work it doesn't have to be suffering necessarily but actually putting something in to get the reward you know and um you know it feels good like the first time you do it feels good you know and then you're just constantly craving so when it talked about comfort sneaking in as a guest like you know it starts to shift your brain like how you crave and want things you know and it's such a tiny veer it's such a small percentage of an angular change that all of a sudden like down the road you're so far off your path you know like you know you're so far off your what did you say like your um fire you said something of the something to the passion or something in that exercise it says the lust for comfort murders the passion murders the passion of the soul so like all of a sudden you i mean it yeah savage wise like you you just wait and give it long enough you know and um like all of a sudden you don't even know where your inner your innermost path is you know um that's what i kind of got from it and like i mean it's it's such a it's just such a slow shift and it's a slippery slope and that's why i think like that's that's smiling at your funeral i was like man like the joke's on you like it truly is at the end and that's why i like that little bit of humor right there that little reference to it smiling i was like oh man like that's a hard pill to swallow you know i think um i think maybe more for our modern purposes a better word i would use would be convenience yeah totally you know convenience because comfort is just like you could think oh well i don't want to i don't want to feel pain but like convenience is specific a little bit more specific like let's make everything easy oh it's just easy let's buy things that are already chopped up it's easy dude i i was reading about this thing it was like it was like just think like in our lifetime like remember when you had to go to the store you actually had to drive to a store you had to buy a roll of film then you had to figure out how to put the film in your weird camera without screwing up the first three pictures and then after you took your pictures you had to drive back and have someone develop you had to wait for like a week and then you had to pay for it to see your pictures and have more blurry and most of them had red blown out eyes and you're like what like yeah you were lucky if you got if you got like one or two good ones you're like oh straight we did good totally we did so good and it's like you know now people like just distort reality with showing their best pictures and the filters and it's so instant you oh delete that one oh this is a good one change this you know um so it is i mean that has an effect on us like if you don't think that's affecting your mind and your brain and the way things are happening in your body like um i mean that's why this passage even written in like the 1920s is still so relevant for today like even more so today with like how convenient life is for us that was like the beginning that was the beginning of the world totally yeah beginning that's like when you know i started to have a car somebody on the block had a car yeah it didn't take you know three days by horseback you know you saw it coming yeah those lazy things like hindsight's 20 20 like that's real hard right now all right let's let's continue here uh but it says but you children of space you restless in rest you shall not be trapped nor tamed your house shall not be an anchor but a mast um it shall not be a glistening film that covers a wound but an eyelid that guards the eye you shall not fold your wings that you may pass through doors nor bend your heads that they strike against the ceiling nor fear to breathe lest the walls should crack and fall down i just you know this part in particular to me is like now there's he's speaking up he's speaking to a particular part of the crowd that's that's listening the i don't want to call them the awakened ones but we'll call them the restless ones you know and that like the when they get comfortable in their convenience and they're still feeling like uh this something's not right here like they're aware there's yeah they're they're aware of something you know and and actually that's an important point because you know as practitioners right like and i'm practicing more than you are currently but we have friends and people who are listening some of us are you know practitioners of various you know medicines or various practices what not or just have family members friends so on and so forth but like a real not i'm not going to say a real but another kind of pandemic is anxiety you know a feeling of being overwhelmed or or not good enough or figure you know put whatever you want but this anxiousness and and to me like this has a sense of like this restlessness you know difficulty sleeping difficulty concentrating difficulty sitting down to do meditation or tasks right yeah but he's but when you say but he's talking about the restlessness he's when you said he's addressing the more awake ones like i think that's a different restlessness you know like the anxiousness for people is i think their inner their inner paths being so abandoned that the restlessness they feel is like that little poking like hey like hey you know well right that's what i'm saying that's what i'm saying that's what i'm saying but you know having having seen it you know um a bit more professionally it there is there are layers it's layers to it you know for sure and but i will say that like it can be a signal from the body also you know of some kind of discomfort or some sequela of a previous uh event you know what i'm saying and like this is sort of like that the the response to a an event or some fear or some you know everybody has a different experience you know but it is it is a it is kind of like an indication that that sort of bing bing bing to say that like things are not right either either things are not right externally that are there that are reflecting on my internal status or things are not right on my internal status and i am reflecting in this way and to people outwardly do you know what i'm saying but either way that there's some desire to be ameliorated there's some there's something that the body that the mind that the heart that the soul whatever is trying to communicate you know and i think that like for the for some people they take this not as an anchor but as a mast you know and not as a and they take it as a glistening film that covers the eye and not an eyelid you know well you you said i mean you yourself said comfort sinks like that's why i think they used iron like this idea that like you know the spirit wants to be free like it wants to reflect nature like our true inner fire wants to be a reflection of nature so um yeah like this sinking anchor versus this map a mass is to be able to move you know it's it's so that you can catch the wind to move you know it is that freedom of movement so yeah no i mean that's what i'm saying and then you know to i think the next part i quite like you should not fold your wings that you may pass through doors you should not bend your head so you don't you know crack your head in the ceiling and you should not fear to breathe so that the walls would crack around you and fall down meaning that like at some point you have this openness you know to be yourself right to express fully you know i feel like i feel like you like this part because you like the fire analogy with like the people behind the rocks and like the little hand shadows oh the allegory of the case yeah so it's like this idea that like if you have been told that you're this way and you've given these wall like this house has been built for you by someone else like it is the same concept you know but like to know your own ability and to know that those actually don't exist that you can you know you can expand your wings and you can stand tall and those are just imaginary walls and things put there by fear from other people that built these houses is really powerful you know it's also kind of like um like a metaphor for like an eggshell and the metamorphosis that that transfer that's occurring on the inside you know and we're all going through this but that the house is kind of like the shell and if you consider the house to be culturally implied things that you should be doing as a as a man as a woman as a student as a wife as a whatever you know yeah that like eventually you can you know feel like you want to sort of sink away from it you know just make it easy make everything very easy but then there are going to be some as like he called it the children of space the restless and rest um you know and i kind of akin that to some kind of like anxious feeling sometimes some people have that like they use this then as fodder for their growth you know as logs for the fire and that they don't fold their wings so that they have to pass through the doors they let you know they allow themselves to shine you know they allow themselves to kind of come out they're gonna they're gonna not be scared of like what's outside the eggshell they're gonna take the risk to like say like maybe i'll learn something maybe i'll grow like if i take the take the risk of going into the unknown like what is out there you know what what if yeah be be unabashedly yourself yeah yeah no there's yeah i have i always have like some kind of like um i don't even know how to say it like admiration for like some people who like dress super duper flamboyant like super flamboyant you know what i'm saying and this is yeah from you know like people who dress in drag totally yeah no me too i'm right there you know what i'm saying or like some other people who like like when they were like women will do this a little bit more than men but some cultures some men will dress just like to the nines like orange like champagne colored suits and like all kinds of hats you know what i'm saying like i just like that's kind of cool like i like the dress don't get me wrong but like that's like next level like you're yeah you're like out you know like i like i quite like that i like that too to me this is like okay i'm gonna show what's on the inside on the outside and not and i'm not going to tame myself you know to fit in because i'm worried about you know um what the things might come we're going to move on just a little bit so primal of you daniel yeah how it is so natural um this other part i quite like i love all of it so whatever um it says you shall not dwell in tombs made by the dead for the living and although the magnificence the magnificence and splendor your house shall not hold your secret nor your longing for that which is boundless in you abides in the mansion of the sky whose door is morning mist and whose windows are the songs and silences of the night so i love that line you shall not dwell in tombs made by the dead for the living you know like i just because we didn't build our home you know it's just not like and so he even in 1920 people had been they weren't building as many homes i mean they still were i mean obviously tons of homes have been built but people were buying homes were already made whereas i don't know how much longer but they were building their own home so things were already kind of you know being purchased and made for them but that like it says um your house shall not hold your secret nor shelter your longing you know so we're talking for me it feels like more lifelong kind of desires these are larger aspirations of the soul right and then yeah it firm it affirms my belief in that when it says for that which is boundless in you abides in the mansion of the sky whose door is the morning mist and whose windows are the songs and silences of the night referring to this kind of like idea of being in nature and now as i'm reading this this to me feels like the journey of one's life yeah you know and then you start as like a younger person you know looking for your identity trying to fit in you know and then as you're trying to go through and you know cross between being in natural or you know being synthetic or being natural you know like you have the the fear of your parents you know of what you should be or should be or shouldn't do or shouldn't do you know and then as you have all of that like you're trying to make your way through life and then it becomes difficult and so part of you wants to go one way the other part wants to go the other way but you take the you take the easier route you know you try the convenience route but yet still something inside you is restless you know and that boundless nature starts to kind of pop up and then you sort of you embrace it and you allow it to come forth like a butterfly out of a cocoon you know and now at the end you're kind of like opening up to your magnificence and splendor as like the the essence your spirit begins to kind of shine as you make the connection between yourself and nature around you yeah that's what i that's me think no that's good i love that that's different like i love hearing you what you think because like me i i kind of like when it got to that part it was actually the last paragraph there was something in it talking about like a glimmering something covering a wound and that or an eyelid guarding an eye so at that point i kind of like i think just my yoga and my like um just like my my thinking of like almost like the chakra system of this like kind of escalating through like primal fear and moving and so i was thinking like that's so superficial to refer to a glimmering like bandage over a wound because this idea that like if you try to get somewhere superficially and it's not real it is just going to be a wound it's going to be a weeping wound that's never going to be healed or this idea of i thought it was interesting to use this idea of an eyelid guarding an eye because like your third eye and your like vision center you know but like it's like a you know a higher connection and that the idea that you do need an eyelid like you need to guard what comes in and out you know because it is the comfort is such a slippery slope to pull you right back down sink you right back to that fear and those like uh those um you know restrictive things and so this idea of like you know in the in the end whenever it was like this house isn't just yours it's going to be like in the sky this idea of almost opening up your crown chakra in a sense and being like connected and that idea of that connectivity of nature and that's how nature works you know it is it functions as a whole there's death and life happening simultaneously there's a natural movement in things um there's a spontaneity there's disaster there's you know and so that's kind of where my brain went with it essentially you know this um this kind of like waking up slowly waking up moving from fear and kind of moving and then like um yeah like you but like you just took it from like you know yeah like when you start young in the world like i mean i've had two kids and whenever like babies are born their eyes have this interesting like they're just like you can tell they're not here yet you know and then uh i have a five-year-old and a three-year-old and like just seeing them like wake up like just just wake up in general you know like normal life like like start like understanding and questioning and like you see this like awakening of consciousness and i think once we hit like puberty or get older people think like oh you're here but i think it is a process we're born and we're searching for our own selves we're searching for an identity we're taking in information and like at some point you have to take responsibility and realize that what we take in affects us and how we do things and there has to be or i don't think there has to be i think for some people it's not enough they need they want to know they feel like this digging at them and so they go on this explorative journey which is where i'm like suffering if that's the if you want to do the work but that's totally me that's personal no but anyway that's kind of like well we've talked about that before you know like joseph campbell the dark knight of the soul you know yeah hero you know this this this sort of art this archetypal journey that people go through you know in terms of like discovering their their true selves but through there's always trials and tribulations in any in any hero's journey you know that's totally part of the story if it just was it wouldn't be a journey if like the guy or the gal or whatever you know woke up and was like all right i'm gonna go fix this problem and then when did it was like cool now you know like that's not really not not really great for storytelling you know all right well well after what i said wrap it up for us so we can be well i think the beauty about this is that like people can have their own kind of takeaways from it um as it as it is with anything but i think the the larger point here was to kind of have an interesting discussion you know that that touched around a number of different topics you know something that was written so long ago yet is still so utterly relevant you know because society even though it's changed also hasn't changed you know there's pressures there is kind of like tendencies and habits and momentum that push us towards certain ways of being now whether that's coming from us and and extending outward the desire for for convenience or whether that's you know sort of imprinted upon us by the over overlords or the structures that be you know i can't say but i can say for for sure that like this has been noticed and has been written about for at least 100 years yeah but probably longer you know sure and sure it sort of re-um re-strengthens or recapitulates the tenor of this show the tenor of this work which is to question things and not accept them at face value to look beyond them actu ask for the intention to find the intention you know behind it because it's not what you do it's how you do it and so even though we're discussing what are we doing we're talking about a passage in the book you know but how are we doing is coming from coming at it from authentic places sharing our beliefs and you know how that works with us listening to what you say having my opinion maybe not necessarily change but at least influenced by what you think and taking that as the consideration to be possible and then vice versa that kind of dialogue this kind of thought process to me is is a far more um in line with building bridges than it is with breaking them yeah i know for sure and that's kind of like um you know one of the one of the passions for what we do here and uh introducing people to things that i think is cool it's awesome having good people on to to chat
